The available engines included a 2-liter 4-cylinder unit (18R-U), a 2-liter inline 6-cylinder SOHC unit (M-U), its EFI version (M-EU), and a new 2.6-liter 6-cylinder unit (4M-U). The previous double wishbone and coil spring system of the front suspension was replaced with a McPherson strut and coil spring arrangement, and the rigid axle rear suspension was upgraded from 4- to 5-link coil spring design. High-end models employed a semi-trailing arm and coil spring-type independent rear suspension. The front wheel disc brakes became standard for all models, and high-end models came with 4-wheel disc brakes. The 1,800 cc engine was brought back in April 1977, and all engines became compliant with the 1978 emission standards by March 1979.
In a minor model change in August 1978, large shock-absorbing bumpers were made available as an option for 2.6- and 2-liter models. At the same time, the brand name was switched from Toyopet to Toyota. In September 1979, a model equipped with a 2,188 cc diesel engine (Type L) was added to the lineup.
